Sitting comfortably on the sofa listening to the rain outside while Yeats plays video games and Hector purringly expands to fill a full one-half of the couch. A lovely and peaceful weekend.

The next week will be a little crazy. Aveline decided not to renew her contract to represent indigent parents, which she's been doing since 2009 or so, in June. But the State had some trouble finding a replacement for her, and she reluctantly agreed to hold onto the contract for another couple of months. We were notified on Friday that they'd found a new contract attorney, they called Aveline, and they had a chat.

Aveline: *after hanging up* Well, they seem nice, and have at least some idea of what they're getting into. You'll need to draft substitutions of counsel and transition letters for all our state clients, and we'll need to scan their files into the computer before we turn them over to them. They start in September.

Me: Okay, so I have until the last, let's say, two weeks in August to get all this done...

Aveline. Start working on those now. Like, RIGHT NOW. I want everything ready to mail and file on August 20th. I want every file scanned in that doesn't have hearings scheduled in the next five weeks. I want to be able to hand this person a box of files, say 'good luck', and ride off into the sunset shrieking with joy. Understood?

Me: ...yes, ma'am.

Next week will therefore be a lot of cut-and-pasting and making sure file and petition numbers are correct. But I'm with Aveline here--we've been doing this for a long time, and it's a soul-wearying job, and it's time for someone else to do it. Plus, if I can get them done by the end of the week, while Yeats is away, I will celebrate with the largest samosa chaat the Indian food truck is legally allowed to sell me.
