After a hectic day yesterday--the phone was ringing off the hook, between an anxious client of Anders' and the usual rush of people who realize during the holidays how much they dislike family members--I came back in this morning to find a quick email from Aveline saying that a client had called after-hours, claiming she had called to pay her bill earlier, but I had just been so rude to her that she couldn't possibly.

OKAY.

First of all, I know for a FACT that I did not speak to this person yesterday. I spoke to a lot of people, but I make a point to remember when someone calls to pay a bill, and she did not call the office.

Secondly, I haven't spoken to this woman or her spouse since they came to the office months ago to sign some papers.

Third, I can count on my fingers the number of times I have been "rude" to a client over the last seven years. Aveline has said from the start that I can defend myself and that I don't have to accept rudeness or foul language from clients. I can be blunt (the number of times I have had to remind people that I am not the attorney, and if they want to complain about their cheating spouses, they can pay Aveline her hourly rate to listen to them), and I have slipped now and then, but my client-courtesy record is excellent, and Aveline knows it.

I emailed Aveline right back, telling her that I had not spoken to that client yesterday and I had no idea why she would say that. She says that it was actually the client's spouse who called, and said that she had told him that was what happened and was why she hadn't paid the (overdue) bill. Aveline thinks that the client didn't want to pay the bill, so when her spouse asked her why it was outstanding, she made up an excuse. He went ahead and paid it while talking to Aveline, and the case is now closed out.

I was livid for about five minutes, but knowing Aveline has my back helps tremendously. I will never have to deal with that client ever again, and if she was trying to finagle her way out of paying her bill, well, she failed. Nyah.

On with the day! Tonight is either gaming, assuming the DM has gotten over his bronchitis, or cuddling on the sofa with Yeats watching "Elf". I'm happy either way.
